Students going into Grade 9 and 10 have opportunities to earn an Indigenous Studies credit, while senior students will earn a Leadership credit and will assist in organizing and facilitating activities throughout the program.
The program is running from July 2nd to 26th and a record number of students are taking part this year. Twenty-seven ADSB students are enrolled and are being supported by ADSB mentors, teachers and community partners.
On July 5th, Patrick Hunter – two-spirit, Ojibwe painter, graphic designer and award winning entrepreneur – spent the morning with students. Together, they worked on art projects, using a number of Patrick’s signature designs. Each student created an art piece, painted on canvas, which they will have as a keepsake. Patrick shared with students some of his own story, about his Ojibwe roots, the importance of his community of Red Lake, Ontario, the inspiration he takes from Woodland painter Norval Morrisseau and his passion for art which led him to the graphic design program at Sault College. Patrick now divides his time between Toronto and his studio in Sault Ste. Marie, offering in-person and virtual paint workshops across North America.
The ADSB Indigenous Summer Transition Program will offer a variety of opportunities for students to develop their Anishinaabemowin language skills and to learn about and apply Indigenous knowledge and traditions. There will be a session on birch bark basket making, a Leadership Day with Turtle Concepts, drum making, beading, teachings about regalia and Ribbon Shirt and Skirt making, to name a few.
Senior Students taking part in the program are helping by sharing information with soon-to-be Grade 9 students about what they can expect in high school. This is a time for younger students to get first-hand knowledge from older students about everything from what a typical high school day looks like, to time-management tips and extra-curricular options. It also provides time for younger students to ask questions about particular subjects, how to make friends and build relationships and what staff members are available for help or advice.
ADSB and SKG thank the many community elders and partners who are taking time to share their knowledge with our students as part of the ADSB Indigenous Summer Transition Program.
